The Southland Drive area of our county, off Regency Rd. near Petross, has needed paving for quite some time. Recently, grant money has become available for paving this road.

Southland Drive had to be closed to traffic while the surface of the road was completely rebuilt in one low lying swampy area. A road detour had to be built for through traffic. Right-of-way for the detour had to be purchased. Old sewer pipes had to be removed on Southland, and four new five foot diameter pipes installed. Logistically this turned out to be a very large road renovation project for the county.

The amount of dirt that had to be moved during this project was much too large for the county backhoe. Larger equipment was needed. An excavator was rented, and operated by county personnel. By renting an excavator and using county personnel to operate this equipment, the county saved approximately $20,000.00 as opposed to contracting this work out.
